Upper School students get a true taste of Cuban cuisine

Upper School Spanish students got a true taste of Cuba on Tuesday, April 24th by visiting “1958 Cuban Cuisine” in Westfield for lunch.

Fifty-three Spanish students from classes ranging from Spanish 2 to Spanish 5 visited the restaurant, whose chef and owners, Luis and Sofi Perez, are from Cuba. They were accompanied by MBS Upper School Spanish teachers Anna Pardo, Vaughan Leigh, Troy Rusnack, Megan Ehrenfeld and Aline de la Torre as well as Steve Patchett from the Advancement Office.

The group began their meal with croquetas de jamon (ham croquettes) as well as chicken empanadas before sampling a buffet of roast pork, sweet plantains, rice and beans, and yuca. Before heading back to MBS, the group enjoyed el cafecito (Cuban espresso), café con leche, and some delicious tres leches cake.

Of course, the experience was about more than food. It gave the students an opportunity to practice their Spanish in a real-world environment, where they could also enjoy colorful Cuban artwork on the walls and listen to the sounds of loud, catchy Cuban music.
